Return to Whole 30, Day 20: Island Livin’

I had a very important addition to my family this week.

Nah, not a baby, a dog, or a cat (ick), or even a goldfish.

No. Like an American marine division in 1944, I acquired an island.

I haven’t exactly had the optimal cooking stations over my last two apartments. My most recent one had about a postage stamp’s worth of space next to the sink where I could chop my vegetables or prep my protein for cooking; it was so cramped that I didn’t even bother to set my air fryer up after I bought it. I would have had to hang it from the ceiling to make room. Which would have been cool, but probably unfair to everyone else living there.

My current apartment has a lot more space to move around, but counter space — as in most ancient apartments in Boston — is also severely limited. Add to that a knife holder, blender, coffee maker, mat for drying dishes, containers of spatulas and whisks, and a New Yorker copy that’s always goddamn hanging around, and my meal prep is a tiny-house challenge.

I needed space to chop and spice and season and create. You’ve got to let me fly!

My cousin/roommate and I agreed: amovable kitchen island was needed. Wayfair delivered (literally, and with the assistance of a discount code from a friend that works there), and we received our shiny new piece of furniture this week — in about a thousand pieces.

Luckily, said roommate is an engineer, so when I came back from my walk last night, we had a big, beautiful new movable kitchen island just waiting for us. Folks, I tried it out this morning, and it was tremendous. I felt like Dale and Brennan when they got their bunk beds. So much more space for activities. I cut and chopped and sliced and shook things around and didn’t accidentally stab myself in the finger ONCE.

Oh, it was wonderful. Boy, the little things I find for excitement in a pandemic — and during Whole 30. Well, damn it, I love my island. It’s the greatest. In my mind? This is the best island out there. It’s a thousand times better than that living X-Men island where all the mutants live these days.

Hell yes, I ended this whole thing with a reference to the current run of the X-Men comics. If you’re still reading this long, you shouldn’t be that surprised.

Alright, we’re 2/3rds of the way there. The TRUE home stretch.

RANDOM THOUGHTS

  • I’m really liking the Amazon Upload show. The female lead (Andy Allo) is going to be a star. Give her a Marvel role ASAP.
  • I miss movie theater popcorn and movie theater candy. I can’t wait until they open up. July, maybe? If so, I’ll be there first thing.
  • I booked an actual vacation last night. Well, sort of. My uncle runs a hotel in upstate New York, so I’m going there for a blessed week of nothingness. I can’t wait.
  • I’ll have to Howard Hughes it for cleanliness the whole trip. That’ll be fun.
  • Ten more days to go. I got this.
